Once there lived an old farmer in a village. He had four sons who always quarreled with one another. The farmer was very anxious about their future. He tried several times to make them understand the value of unity, but they paid no heed to his advice. One day, he fell seriously ill. He called his sons and asked them to bring a bundle of sticks. When they brought the bundle, he told them to break it. Each of them tried one by one, but none could break the bundle. Then he untied the bundle and gave them the sticks individually. This time, they could break them easily. Then the old farmer said, “My sons, do you understand the lesson? If you remain united like the bundle, no one can harm you. But if you are divided, you will be easily defeated.” The sons realized their mistake and promised never to quarrel again. They understood the strength of unity and lived together in peace and harmony.
Moral: Unity is strength.
Once there was a shepherd boy who used to graze his sheep near a forest. He was very naughty and often became bored while watching the sheep. One day, he thought of a trick to have some fun. He shouted, “Wolf! Wolf! Help me!” The villagers came running with sticks to save him, but there was no wolf. The boy laughed at them. He played the same trick again the next day, and again the villagers came, only to be fooled. They became angry and warned him not to lie again. But the boy did not take their words seriously. One day, a real wolf came. The boy shouted in fear, “Wolf! Wolf! Please help!” But this time, the villagers thought he was lying again and did not come. The wolf killed many of his sheep. The boy realized his mistake and felt sorry for lying.
Moral: Nobody believes a liar, even when he speaks the truth.

Once there lived a king named Robert Bruce of Scotland. He loved his country and fought many battles to free it from enemies. But unfortunately, he was defeated again and again. His soldiers lost hope, and he was forced to hide in a cave to save his life. One day, while sitting in the cave, he saw a spider trying to climb the wall. The spider fell down many times but did not give up. It kept trying and finally succeeded in reaching the top. This inspired the king. He thought, “If a small spider can succeed after so many failures, why can’t I?” He gathered his soldiers again, encouraged them, and fought one last battle with great courage. This time, he won and regained his kingdom. Since then, he never lost hope, and he taught his people that each failure brings us one step closer to success.
Moral: Failure is the pillar of success.
Once upon a time, two close friends were walking through a forest. They promised to help each other in danger. Suddenly, they saw a bear coming towards them. One of the friends quickly climbed up a nearby tree to save himself. He forgot all about his friend. The other friend did not know how to climb trees. He had heard that bears do not touch dead bodies, so he lay down on the ground and held his breath. The bear came near him, sniffed his ears, face, and body, and finally thought he was dead. The bear went away without harming him. After the bear left, the friend on the tree came down and asked, “What did the bear whisper in your ear?” The other friend replied, “The bear told me not to trust a friend who leaves you in danger.”
Moral: A friend in need is a friend indeed.
Once there lived a group of mice in a house. They were always in fear of a fat and clever cat who would suddenly attack and kill them. The mice were very worried and could not move freely. So, one day they held a meeting to find a way to get rid of the cat. Many suggestions were made, but none seemed useful. At last, a young mouse stood up and said, “Let’s tie a bell around the cat’s neck. Then we will hear her coming and escape easily.” All the mice clapped and agreed it was a good idea. But then an old wise mouse asked, “That’s fine, but who will bell the cat?” None of the mice had an answer. Everyone looked at each other in silence because no one had the courage to do such a risky job. In the end, the plan failed because there was no one brave enough to carry it out.
Moral: It is easy to make plans, but hard to carry them out.
Once there was a poor boy named Karim. His family was very poor, but he was honest and hardworking. Every day, he studied under a streetlamp at night because his house had no electricity. He also helped his parents by doing small jobs in the village. Many boys in his class laughed at him and said, “You will never succeed.” But Karim did not listen to them. He continued his hard work with patience and determination. After a few years, Karim passed his exams with brilliant results and got a government scholarship. He later became a successful officer. The same people who once laughed at him now praised him. Karim proved that success does not depend on luck alone—it depends on hard work.
Moral: Industry is the mother of good luck.
Once there was a famous scholar who was invited to a rich man’s house for dinner. On the day of the invitation, the scholar wore simple and old clothes and went to the rich man’s house. The guards at the gate did not let him enter, thinking he was a beggar. The scholar left quietly. Then he went home, changed into a fine, expensive dress, and came back. This time, the guards welcomed him and took him inside with great respect. During the dinner, the scholar started putting food into his pockets. Everyone was surprised and asked, “Why are you doing this?” The scholar replied, “Since I am being honored because of my clothes, not for who I am, let my clothes eat the food.” The rich man and the guests realized their mistake. They felt ashamed and apologized. They understood that a person’s value does not depend on their dress but on their knowledge, behavior, and character.
Moral: Dress does not make a man great.
It was a hot summer day. A crow was very thirsty and was flying in search of water. He flew here and there but could not find any. He became very tired and almost gave up hope. At last, he saw a pitcher under a tree. He flew down and looked inside. There was a little water at the bottom of the pitcher, but his beak could not reach it. The crow tried to push the pitcher over, but it was too heavy. Then the crow got an idea. He saw some small stones nearby. He picked them up one by one and dropped them into the pitcher. Slowly, the water level rose. At last, the water came up near the mouth of the pitcher. The crow drank the water and flew away happily.
Moral: Where there is a will, there is a way.
Once upon a time in a small frontier town lived a young cowboy named Jesse. Jesse loved telling stories about his daring adventures—how he once wrestled a grizzly bear, how he’d roped a wild mustang with his bare hands, and how he’d found a secret vein of gold in the mountains. Everyone in town enjoyed his tales and listened eagerly… at first. One day, a real crisis struck the town: a dangerous stampede of cattle was headed straight toward the main street. The townsfolk panicked, but Jesse saw his chance to be the hero he’d always claimed to be. He jumped onto his horse and galloped into the herd, shouting, “Stand back! I’ll save you all!” But Jesse had never driven cattle in his life. He zig-zagged among the panicking animals, yelling orders they didn’t understand. Instead of slowing them down, he spooked them even more. The herd thundered on, scattering into store windows and knocking over wagons. When it was over, the townspeople were safe but furious. They realized that Jesse’s reckless “rescue” had made things much worse. They lost faith in his tall tales—and in him. Humiliated, Jesse rode out of town and spent days reflecting on his mistakes. He finally understood that his lies hadn’t made him brave—they had only put others in danger and cost him his reputation. Determined to change, he returned and confessed everything. Over time, he worked honestly alongside the ranch hands—mending fences, herding cattle, and earning everyone’s respect through real deeds, not empty boasts.
Moral: A liar cowboy wins no trust; honesty is the true mark of courage.

Rahim: Good morning, Anika! You look fresh today. Do you exercise regularly?
Anika: Good morning, Rahim! Yes, I do. I go for a jog in the park every morning for thirty minutes.
Rahim: That’s great. Why do you prefer jogging?
Anika: Jogging improves my cardiovascular health, reduces stress, and keeps me energetic throughout the day.
Rahim: I’ve been meaning to start exercising but I never find the time. How do you manage?
Anika: I wake up at 5:30 a.m. so I can finish before breakfast and get ready for college. If you plan your day, you’ll always find a slot.

Sara: Hello, Imran. I heard you collect old coins. Is that true?
Imran: Hello, Sara. Yes, coin collecting is my hobby. I’ve been doing it for three years.
Sara: That’s interesting! How did you get started?
Imran: My grandfather gave me a silver rupee from 1901, and I became fascinated by the history behind each coin.
Sara: Which is your most prized coin?
Imran: A copper one-anna piece from Emperor Akbar’s reign. It’s rare and in excellent condition.
Sara: Wow! Do you display them anywhere?
Imran: Yes, I keep them in a glass showcase in my room, with labels detailing their origin and year.
Sara: It must take patience and care. Do you ever trade with other collectors?
Imran: Occasionally, at numismatic fairs. It’s a great way to learn and find new pieces.
Sara: Your hobby sounds both educational and enjoyable. Maybe I’ll try stamp collecting!
Imran: That’s a wonderful idea. Every hobby opens doors to new knowledge and friends.

Saba: Wonderful choices. I’ve read they grow quickly and support local wildlife.
Kamal: Exactly. See you on Saturday with gardening gloves!
Saba: See you then—let’s make our community greener!
Myself: Hey Rafi, do you read the newspaper regularly?
Friend: Not really. I sometimes glance at the headlines online, but I don’t follow it regularly. Why do you ask?
Myself: I think it’s a great habit. Reading newspapers not only keeps us informed about current affairs but also helps improve our language skills.
Friend: Hmm, that sounds useful. But can’t we just get news from social media?
Myself: Social media often spreads rumors and unverified news. Newspapers, on the other hand, usually go through proper editing and fact-checking. Plus, the analysis in editorials and opinion sections helps develop critical thinking.
Friend: That’s a good point. I never thought of it that way. But doesn’t it take a lot of time?
Myself: Not really. Just spending 20-30 minutes a day can give you a solid understanding of what’s happening around the world. And you’ll learn a lot of new vocabulary and expressions, especially if you read English newspapers.
Friend: Wow, now I see how beneficial it can be. Maybe I’ll subscribe to one. Which newspaper do you suggest?
Myself: For national news, you can read The Daily Star or Prothom Alo. For international perspectives, BBC News or The Guardian are great.
Friend: Thanks! I’ll definitely start reading regularly from now on.
Myself: That’s great! Trust me, you’ll notice the difference within a few weeks.
Myself: Hi Tanvir! I’ve noticed you’ve been attending English spoken classes lately. How is it going?
Friend: Hi! Yes, I joined last month. It’s going quite well, actually. I realized how important English is these days.
Myself: Absolutely. English is often called the global language. It’s essential for higher education, business, and even using the internet effectively.
Friend: That’s true. Most textbooks, journals, and even job applications are in English. Without good English skills, it’s hard to go far.
Myself: Exactly. Even in Bangladesh, knowing English gives you an edge in the job market. Employers prefer candidates who can communicate fluently in English.
Friend: I also noticed that it’s easier to travel and talk to people from different countries if you know English.
Myself: True. It also helps in exams like IELTS or TOEFL if you want to study abroad. And English movies, books, and websites expose us to global cultures.
Friend: But sometimes, I feel nervous about speaking. What should I do?
Myself: Practice is the key. Try speaking with friends, watching English shows with subtitles, and reading aloud. Don’t worry about mistakes — that’s how you learn.
Friend: That’s encouraging! I’ll keep working on it. I want to be confident in English.
Myself: You’re on the right track. Keep it up!
Myself: Exams are just around the corner. Are you feeling prepared?
Friend: To be honest, not really. I feel overwhelmed. There’s so much to study!
Myself: I understand. But with proper planning, it becomes manageable. Do you follow any routine?
Friend: Not a fixed one. I just study randomly based on what I feel like.
Myself: That’s not very effective. You should make a daily study schedule. Divide your subjects and set specific goals for each day.
Friend: That sounds helpful. What else should I do?
Myself: Revise regularly. Don’t wait till the last week. And practice writing answers — that improves your speed and memory.
Friend: I always struggle with time in the exam hall.
Myself: Then you must solve past exam papers under timed conditions. That will give you an idea of how to manage time during the real exam.
Friend: Good idea! Any tips for staying focused?
Myself: Keep your phone away, take short breaks, and stay hydrated. Also, make sure you sleep at least 7 hours every night. A fresh mind works faster.
Friend: Thanks a lot! Your tips are really practical. I’ll start following them from today.
Myself: Best of luck! Let’s both try to give our best this time.

Subject: Discover the Natural Beauty of Bangladesh
Dear Alex,
I hope you’re doing well. Today I want to share something special — the breathtaking natural beauty of my country, Bangladesh.
Bangladesh is a land of rivers, greenery, and natural wonders. The Sundarbans, the largest mangrove forest in the world, is home to the majestic Royal Bengal Tiger. Cox’s Bazar, with the longest natural sea beach in the world, is a must-see. We also have the serene hill tracts of Bandarban and Rangamati, where the green hills touch the sky.
Village life here is equally beautiful. The golden paddy fields, the peaceful rural roads, and the sound of birds make it feel like paradise. The sunrise and sunset over the rivers create scenes that words can hardly describe.
I hope you get a chance to visit and experience this natural beauty in person. It would be a pleasure to show you around!

Subject: How I’m Learning English Effectively
Dear Farhan,
Thanks for your last e-mail. You asked me how I’m learning English, so I thought I’d share what’s working for me.
First, I try to read English newspapers daily and watch English news or videos with subtitles. It helps me improve vocabulary and pronunciation. I also write short paragraphs and check them for mistakes using grammar apps. Practicing speaking with friends is another helpful method I follow.
Most importantly, I’ve made a habit of learning five new words each day and using them in sentences. It may seem simple, but it’s very effective.
Try these methods and let me know how they work for you!
Take care,

Dear Imran,
I hope you are doing well. I want to share something important with you — the habit of reading newspapers.
Reading newspapers helps you stay updated with national and international events. It improves your general knowledge, language skills, and vocabulary. Editorials also develop your thinking and analytical ability.
Even if you read for just 20 minutes a day, you’ll see improvement in your English and your understanding of current affairs. It will also help in competitive exams in the future.
So please start reading a good English or Bengali newspaper every day.

A village market is a common sight in the rural areas of Bangladesh. It is a place where villagers gather to buy and sell daily necessities. Usually, it is set up in an open space under a large banyan tree or beside a river or canal. There are two types of village markets: daily markets and weekly “haats.” The haat is held on specific days of the week and attracts more people.
The market begins in the morning and continues till noon. Some larger markets remain open till evening. In a village market, various shops and stalls are arranged in rows. One can find vegetables, fruits, fish, meat, clothes, groceries, and household items. Sellers shout out their prices to attract buyers. The fish market is the most crowded section, as fresh fish is in high demand.
A village market plays a vital role in the rural economy. It is a meeting place for people from nearby villages. Farmers bring their produce, and in exchange, they buy necessary goods. However, village markets often lack proper sanitation and drainage. The environment becomes dirty, especially during the rainy season.
Despite its shortcomings, a village market is a lifeline for rural people. It not only fulfills their economic needs but also serves as a social gathering place. Therefore, it is essential to improve its condition for the benefit of the villagers.
Hobby means an activity done regularly in one’s leisure time for pleasure. Everyone needs a hobby to refresh their mind and keep away from boredom. My favorite hobby is gardening. It gives me immense joy and satisfaction. In my small garden, I grow flowers and vegetables.
I spend my free time taking care of my garden. I water the plants regularly, remove weeds, and sometimes change the soil. I have planted roses, marigolds, and sunflowers. In one corner, I grow seasonal vegetables like tomatoes, spinach, and carrots. Watching the flowers bloom and vegetables grow fills my heart with happiness.
Gardening teaches me patience and responsibility. It helps me stay physically active and mentally relaxed. It also makes me aware of the importance of nature. When I see butterflies and birds visiting my garden, I feel connected to the environment.
In this busy world, a hobby like gardening helps me to live a balanced life. It keeps me away from the harmful effects of excessive screen time and helps me enjoy the beauty of nature. That is why gardening is my favorite hobby.
A student is the future of a nation. Therefore, it is essential for a student to understand and perform his duties properly. The primary duty of a student is to acquire knowledge. A student must be attentive in class, study regularly, and respect teachers. Punctuality and discipline are also key duties of a student.
Besides academic responsibilities, students should develop good habits and moral values. They must be truthful, obedient, and hardworking. Helping classmates and showing kindness to others are also important duties. A good student not only thinks about personal success but also about the welfare of others.
In addition, students have social duties. They should help in community development, take part in cleanliness drives, and raise awareness about important issues. In times of national need, students can volunteer in relief works and campaigns.
A student’s life is the time to build character and prepare for future responsibilities. If a student performs his duties sincerely, he will become a responsible citizen. Thus, students must be dedicated to their duties to contribute to the progress of the country.
Reading newspapers is a good habit that keeps us informed about the world. It is the storehouse of knowledge and information. In the modern world, where events occur every moment, newspapers play a vital role in our daily life.
There are different types of newspapers—daily, weekly, and monthly. They contain news about politics, economy, sports, science, culture, and entertainment. By reading newspapers, we can know what is happening not only in our country but also across the globe.
Newspapers help students improve their language skills, vocabulary, and general knowledge. They also create awareness about current affairs, health issues, and government policies. For job seekers, the classified section of newspapers is very helpful.
However, newspapers must be read carefully. One should not believe rumors or false news. Nowadays, some newspapers publish biased or sensational news for profit. Therefore, it is important to choose a reputed newspaper.
In short, reading newspapers is an essential habit in this age of information. It keeps us updated and educated, making us better citizens.
Science has made our life easier, faster, and more comfortable. It has changed the world in a way that was unimaginable a few centuries ago. The inventions of modern science are nothing short of miracles.
Electricity is one of the greatest wonders of science. It lights our homes, runs machines, and powers industries. Modern communication, such as the telephone, mobile phone, and internet, has made the world a global village. We can talk to anyone anywhere in the world within seconds.
In the field of transport, science has given us cars, buses, trains, ships, and airplanes. Travelling long distances has become easier and quicker. In medical science, the invention of X-rays, MRI, vaccines, and surgical tools has saved millions of lives.
Science has also made progress in agriculture. Modern machinery, fertilizers, and irrigation systems help grow more food. Television, radio, and computers are excellent sources of knowledge and entertainment.
However, science can be harmful if misused. Weapons of mass destruction and environmental pollution are examples of its dark side. We must use science for the benefit of humanity.
To conclude, science is a blessing for mankind. Its wonders have brought revolutionary changes in every sphere of life. We should use it wisely to build a better future.
